RIGA - About 100 people a day are tested for Covid-19, paying for the tests themselves, said Jurijs Perevoscikovs, head of the Infectious Disease Risk Analysis and Prevention Department at the Center for Disease Prevention and Control, in a press conference today.

Those are people who have been abroad, but they do not have any symptoms, or, on the contrary, they have not been abroad, but have symptoms similar to Covid-19, the specialist said.

"Today we see that tests of seven of those people came out positive," he said.

He said that the state is expanding the range of cases when government-funded Covid-19 tests can be made. "We will examine more patients - with clinical indications without any link to foreign trips, representatives of the operative services who have special risks because of contacts with a large number of people," said Perevoscikovs.

Speaking about why Latvia, even though performing a larger number of tests, shows a smaller number of confirmed Covid-19 cases than in Lithuania and Estonia, the specialist said that the epidemic is just at the start, when most of the cases are related with return from abroad and most of the cases are mild.

"We do not have patients in hospitals suffering from severe pneumonia, we do not have patients with critical acute respiratory syndrome. In the development stage of the epidemic, we have a smaller number of patients," he said.
